Group helps serve families in the Bootheel

CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KAIT) - The Family Support Project is a program within the Pemiscot County Initiative Network, that helps to serve families with child abuse or neglect in both Dunklin and Pemiscot County.

"We try our best to give them those resources so they can strengthen their family, and continue to live as positive as they possibly can," said Collaborative Coordinator Mabeline Woods.

The project has helped over 240 families since it started back in 2009.

"We help single parents, teen parents, someone who doesn't have a high school diploma, someone who needs help with the GED or has mental or physical disabilities," said Woods.

Their services were made possible because of a grant they received from  Children's Trust Fund, but come June the project will no longer have the funds.

"It's our last year for receiving funds from Children's Trust Fund, so we're asking the community to come on board," said Woods. "Come and help us and keep our children safe and provide the resources that they need."

Wood's said the loss of the project would be devastating. She's seen even one of the Initiative's own succeed through the project.

"We have a success story here inside Pemiscot Initiative Network," said Woods. "She was a single mom with four kids, and now she is the assistant manager to our executive director."

If you would like to help or would like more information, call Mabeline Wood's (573) 333-5301, extension 227.
