LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Lubbock citizens say a threat to their freedom of speech led to a unique kind of protest at Thursday night's city council meeting.

Frustrated citizens showed up in long beards and camouflage pants to try and keep their comments on the air.

The protest came as a reaction to the city's decision to not air citizen comments at the meetings. The protesters were front and center at city hall as they lined up to speak about the about the proposal.

The protesters showed up in costume to establish a parallel with Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson, who was put on a short hiatus from the his popular reality show after making controversial remarks.

Lubbock Resident Mikel Ward says they just want to be heard.

"We've been really big, strong supporters of the Mayor because he's been so transparent and open, so this just seemed out of character and we wanted to get their attention," Ward said.

Tune into Daybreak Today on Friday morning to hear the mayor's response to the protest.

Also on the agenda, a zoning change for the new Walmart at Quaker and 114th Street.

That motion passed seven to zero.
