WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Saturday morning, Elizabeth Redenbaugh (D) announced that she will be running for the 9th District seat in the North Carolina State Senate.

The former New Hanover County School Board Member said that one of the reasons she decided to run is to help fight for changes in the state's education system.

"What's been happening in the General Assembly and Raleigh, they have been dismantling the education system piece by piece and I want to get up there and fight for public education," explained Redenbaugh. "Fight not only for my children and grandchildren, but also fight for everyone else's."

One of her goals is to raise the salaries of teachers. She says that if elected she plans to work with former Governor Jim Hunt to raise teacher pay to the national average. During her speech to supporters Saturday, Redenbaugh pointed out that teacher pay in North Carolina ranks 46 out of all 50 states.

"That's something that we need to turn around quickly and once we start that process and investing more in education than I think you will start to see things turn around," said Redenbaugh.

She said education is and has always been one of her priorities.  Redenbaugh received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award in 2011 for her strong opposition to a school redistricting plan that she said would result in socioeconomic and racial segregation.

She remained outspoken after losing her seat on the school board last November. At a rally for public education held this summer on the steps of the federal courthouse in Wilmington, she urged demonstrators to contact their legislators, saying the General Assembly put the state on a race to the bottom.

Wilmington attorney Deb Butler, who lost to Senator Thom Goolsby in the 2012 general election, said that she endorses Redenbaugh and fully supports her candidacy.
