Storm drain grates stolen in Griswold

GRISWOLD, CT (WFSB) -

Dozens of storm drain grates have been stolen in Griswold.

The thefts are happening throughout the town. A total of 29 storm drain grates have been stolen, which is costing the city about $6,000.

The grates pop out, but they are not easy to remove. Each one weighs around 100 pounds, so town officials believe that more than one person is involved in this theft.

The town noticed Wednesday that some of the grates were missing when residents started calling it in.

The storm drain grates are made from steel, so town officials believe that the grates are being sold to scarp yards, but it is now creating a safety issue.

"Thank goodness no one has gotten hurt. They need to realize if someone gets hurt the procession will come down furious because this is public safety, and thank goodness no one is hurt yet," said Kevin Skulczyck, Griswold first selectman.

Interestingly, this type of theft is happening nationwide. There have been stolen grates in Oregon, Georgia, and New York.
