SPRINGFIELD, TN (WSMV) -

A Middle Tennessee police chief is facing charges after things apparently got way out of hand at a popular Springfield restaurant.

Word of Michael Douglas' arrest spread quickly over the weekend in Pleasant View, where he is the chief of police.

According to an arrest report, a bartender had to call officers after Douglas was allegedly drunk and throwing drink coasters at women.

"Being out in the community and being intoxicated and doing stupid stuff is not acceptable. It's unacceptable for anyone else, and it's certainly unacceptable for a law enforcement officer," said Springfield Police Chief David Thompson.

Witnesses said Douglas even stole drinks from a table full of women. When officers arrived, they said Douglas kicked, cursed and damaged the inside of their cruiser.

"When something like this happens, it's embarrassing for the department, it's embarrassing for the law enforcement officer and for the city," Thompson said.

Douglas served in the military and the Robertson County sheriff's office. He's been chief of police in Pleasant View for 11 years.

Douglas was charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest and released shortly after his arrest on a $1,000 bond.

Pleasant View Mayor Perry Keenan said he will conduct an internal investigation

"You don't judge 42 years of their life and character by one incident, and we all make mistakes. We all have those things we can look back on and say, 'I really wish I hadn't of,' or 'I had a lapse in judgment,'" Keenan said. "We can get to the bottom of this. We just ask everyone be patient."

Douglas has never been in trouble or been disciplined until now.
