Judge orders McDonnells released without bond

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A federal judge allowed former governor Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, released on their own recognizance in a bond hearing Friday morning.

The couple is now headed to an arraignment at 11 a.m. on 14 charges related to the ongoing gift scandal.

The former governor was calm and smiling in court. He held his wife's hand, received a thumbs up from his daughters and thanked the media for coming before the hearing began.

More than 60 people crowded the courtroom, while dozens had to be turned away.

Judge David Novak admonished attorneys for leaks in the case.

"This case is going to be tried in the courtroom and will not be tried in the media. The citizens of this wonderful Commonwealth deserve a fair trial. The gamesmanship with the media ends now," he said.
