VALDEZ, AK (CNN) - Avalanches have cut off thousands of Alaskans living in a remote coastal town.
Images from an oil pipeline company show the avalanche damage surrounding Valdez.
The Alaska Department of Transportation says the snow-slides have buried the town's only land route in or out the Richardson Highway.
Officials say the road could remain closed for at least a week.
Some residents are under a voluntary evacuation advisory due to the avalanche threat.
Authorities say food and fuel supplies will be brought in by barge to the nearby Port of Valdez.
The town's airport remains open as well.
