LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Tonight when you go bed, here's something to think about. Do you know some children in our community don't have their own bed to sleep in? A local woman is working to change that, bed by bed, and build up teams at the same time.

At a place called the Workshop groups and companies gather to work on team development skills.

While employees from Genentech were learning ways to work better together, they also have the task of building two beds for kids in just one hour.

They have learned a little about each child. One little girl loves everything University of Louisville. The other wants to be a singer and dancer and likes the colors pink and purple.

All of the employees worked together to build the wooden bed. Some built the actual structure while others painted messages of inspiration on the slats that hold the mattress. Workshop Owner Stephanie Ringer had already purchased the mattresses, the bedding and some giant stuffed animals to finish the bed.

Ringer said she got the idea after attending a conference and then called a local school and asked if there were students who might need a bed. The woman said, "Yes, I'll get you a list."

One of those students was 8-year-old Azaria Simms, the aspiring singer and dancer. When Azaria came to workshop where she was surprised with the bed she didn't know what to say. Her mother's reaction said it all.

"Thank you," said LaQuita Simms as she started to cry. "It's her own space. Her own sweet dreams."

Simms used to share her bed with her daughter. "Don't got to worry about tossing and turning and none of that next to me anymore," Simms joked.

Genentech employees loved seeing their reaction.

"She was just so happy, so happy for her child," said employee Kay Gard.

Ringer even made sure that the three other children in the family got beds too.
