WASHINGTON, DC (CNN) - Attorney General Eric Holder officially confirmed Wednesday that the U.S. Justice Department is investigating the Target data breach.
Target has said data thieves stole information from up to 70 million customers during the holiday shopping season.
Holder testified Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
"The Department of Justice takes very seriously reports of any data breach, particularly those involving personally identifiable or financial information, and looks into allegations that are brought to its attention. While we generally do not discuss specific matters under investigation, I can confirm that the Department is investigating the breach involving the United States retailer, Target. And we are committed to working to find not only the perpetrators of these sorts of data breaches - but also any individuals and groups who exploit that data via credit card fraud," Holder said.
Back in December, Target said the Department of Justice was investigating the attack.
But Holder's statement on Wednesday is the first time a government official has commented on the probe.
