BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A Birmingham woman recounts how she jumped from her vehicle as it slid into the Cahaba River Tuesday.

Gricel Ochoa leaving her office and driving along Overton Road when the accident happened.

"Once I was on Overton I guess the area…was just a big patch of ice. As soon as I was letting go of the brakes a little it just started sliding and I figured…it was going to stop because there was a little bit of grass on the side before the fall. It wasn't stopping so I just thought, "Nope, I got to get out of this car,'" Ochoa said. "And I just unbuckled myself and threw myself to the side."

Ochoa says she had her cell phone on her but everything else was left in the car.

Ochoa says that strangers were actually trying to get into the water to save her because they thought she was still in her car. She says she yelled to them that she was OK on the bank.

She says several other cars went off the road in the same place but they were caught in the trees.
