SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Western Massachusetts saw the snow stack up very quickly Wednesday morning, forcing school cancellations for virtually the entire region, as well as very hazardous road conditions for those needing to get to work.

The first snowflakes started falling in the Springfield area around 4 a.m., but accumulated quickly as soon as the storm arrived. By 8 a.m., towns such as Holyoke, Westfield and West Springfield already reported 5 to 7 inches of snow as snowfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour were being reported in parts of the Pioneer Valley.

Through 10 a.m., many locations across northern Connecticut and the Springfield to Northampton corridor reported about 7 to 10 inches of snow.

Fortunately, the heaviest bands and quickest accumulations are exiting the region for the afternoon, with more scattered activity finishing out the day. A little bit of sleet mixes into the Springfield area this afternoon as well.

While there is the possibility of another quick burst of snow during the afternoon hours, most locations will only add minor amounts to the snowfall totals already recorded.

Road crews should have a window of opportunity to clear up the roads better for the evening commute compared to this morning's. Still take it slow though, and officials urge people to simply stay home tonight if you can.

Another winter storm is targeting the Northeast for the end of the weekend. The complete seven-day forecast can be found on the Weather tab.
