Garden City police officer testifies in elder abuse case

State prosecutors called their first witness Wednesday morning in an elder abuse case.

Testimony is underway for Maria Wiggins and Michael Nesmith who are are charged with the elder abuse of Wiggins' then 68-year-old mother.

A Garden City police officer is testifying for the state. A jury of eight women, four men and a male alternate were selected Tuesday afternoon in the case.

Garden City police say the couple dragged the disable woman around, beat her, starved her, even put locks on the refrigerator so she could not get food. Police say both Wiggins and Nesmith held her captive inside the house so they could steal her social security and disability money.

Police discovered the abuse after the elderly woman went to the hospital with bruises.
