LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Thirty-five thousand customers of LG&E and Kentucky Utilities lost power at the height of the latest winter storm, one that brought a significant layer of ice to the region on Tuesday. A spokeswoman for the utility said crews have restored power to more than half of those people and hope to have everyone's service restored by Thursday night.

Natasha Collins said this is an "all hands on deck" situation and that an extra 250 crews from the surrounding area were being brought in to help get the power back on.

Collins joined Mayor Greg Fischer and representatives from agencies that provide emergency services Wednesday morning to update the public about the response to what Fischer described as the 13th storm event city crews have worked this season.

Collins reminded people to treat downed power lines as if they are live lines. Stay away from them, she said, and call 502-589-1444 to report the situation.

The mayor praised the teamwork of metro crews who continue to clear roads and assist stranded drivers, reminding the public that their work should not be taken for granted.

He said the city still has plenty of salt with an estimated 90,000 tons of salt remaining in reserve.

Fischer also urged the public to use caution when walking underneath trees or around buildings since falling trees, limbs or snow sliding off roofs have the potential to cause injuries.
