Georgia Power preparing for winter storm

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Governor Nathan Deal is urging truckers passing through Albany today to stay away from Atlanta for the next few days.  Truck drivers tell us they can't just park their big rigs, so they'll keep on truckin. Donna Talbert says he is relying on one thing to get him through the winter storm.

"Praying, a lot of prayer, and being careful, taking it easy," said Talbert.

The Governor promises the state is much more prepared for this storm than the one that paralyzed metro Atlanta two weeks ago.

"We are at the state level doing everything that is warranted at the state level," said Governor Nathan Deal.

Georgia Power is taking North Georgia's winter weather seriously as well, that's why Georgia Power crews from South Georgia are going up North to lend a helping hand.

"Typically we would send about 23 or 24 people of what we call an A team, this time around we are actually going to be sending more than that," said Jay Smith, Area Manager, Georgia Power.

North Georgia is expected to experience ice and snow, that could possibly bring down power lines. Depending on how bad it gets, Georgia Power may need help from its sister companies in Mississippi and Alabama.

"So it's typical line work, a very concentrated amount of it because so many power lines down, and that sort of thing," said Smith.

Georgia Power crews are expected to leave Albany for Atlanta around 6 AM Tuesday morning.
