Officials: May take up to 3 weeks to fully restore power to the Lowcountry

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

It could take up to three weeks to fully restore power to parts of the Lowcountry, according to power officials representing SC electric cooperatives.

A release sent out Thursday evening states, "Coastal and Edisto electric cooperatives, whose systems are almost completely out of power, may be a two-to three-week process." 

Edisto Electric covers several counties, including Colleton, Dorchester, Orangeburg and some of Berkeley. Coastal Electric is made up of Colleton County and portions of Bamberg and Dorchester Counties.

The release goes on to say Berkeley Electric co-op expects to fully restore power by the middle of or late next week.

The power outages are due to freezing rain and ice accumulation.

According to SCE&G, there are roughly 59,000 customers without power across the state with around 5,364 outages reported in Dorchester County, about 379 reported in Charleston County, around 1,134 in Berkeley and approximately 4,584 in Colleton County. 

Officials with the Charleston area National Weather Service say several trees are down across Dorchester County, which likely contributes to some of the outages in Moncks Corner and Summerville.

Berkeley Electric Cooperative's outage map shows roughly 20,000 customers without power with most outages in the Berkeley County area and a couple of thousand in Dorchester County. 

BEC released the following press release Friday afternoon:

Outage numbers are slowly starting to come down in what has become the worst outage in the co-op's history.

Currently there are 16,510 members without power. 2,188 members have been restored since 8 am this morning and 57666 have been restored since the storm began on Wednesday.

Outages will continue through the weekend and possibly into next week for some of the hardest hit areas. New outages are being reported hourly and crews are having to repair widespread damage to the system.

Around 235 Santee Cooper customers in Berkeley County are also without power. 

As of 6 a.m. Friday, Coastal Electric reported 8,900 outages. Edisto Electric reported 10,500 customers without power.
