WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Thousands of families were without power Wednesday night, and some elderly and disabled said they're worried about staying warm.

More than a dozen residents of Glover Plaza apartments in Wilmington gathered in the community's clubhouse because they said it was the only building in the neighborhood with any power.

With some of his neighbors hooked up to oxygen machines, Scott Whisenant said he can't believe that the people huddled around space heaters were not a priority for power or warmth.

"This is a very bad situation for these individuals," said Whisenant.

Whisenant said his neighbors couldn't go to the emergency shelter if they wanted to.

Tammy Coats said she did not expect her neighbors to return to their cold, dark apartments. Looking around the clubhouse, she said they couldn't stay there either.

"There's no way people can stay here," she said. "These are elderly people and disabled people and they need their rest."

Coats said everyone received noticed from the Wilmington Housing Authority to prepare for the winter storm, but she said there is no way to prepare medical equipment that needs power.
