Furthering Youth Education Efforts, PwC's Pittsburgh Office Donates a Combination of Grants and Volunteer Hours to The Neighborhood Academy and Higher Achievement
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- PwC US announced today that the Pittsburgh office will donate a total of $35,000 to two Pittsburgh non-profit educational organizations, funded through grants from the PwC Charitable Foundation. As part of the firm's "Earn Your Future" campaign, the grants are being awarded to The Neighborhood Academy and Higher Achievement. The grants are in addition to volunteer work, in which staff from PwC's Pittsburgh office dedicated approximately 500 hours to these organizations in support of their youth education campaigns.
"Tackling issues around youth education, diversity and financial literacy are critical to driving future economic development opportunities and strengthening the bonds in our communities. Our commitment to supporting Pittsburgh's youth spans across our entire organization, and I want to thank the dedicated staff from PwC Pittsburgh who regularly take the time to engage and educate our local students on business, fiscal responsibility and financial management," said Bob McCutcheon, Managing Partner for PwC's Pittsburgh office. "The Neighborhood Academy and Higher Achievement are terrific examples of local organizations that make a persistent impression, and we're happy to be working with them to make a difference in our community."
The Neighborhood Academy provides less fortunate students with the opportunity of experiencing a private, college preparatory school. PwC recently formed a new collaboration with the school called "Pathway to Promise," designed to engage the junior and senior classes in developing leadership, communication and financial literacy skills. Aligned to the youth education pledge, students participated in PwC's "High School Business Challenge," which required them to create a business plan for an independent record label in the music industry. This allowed students to be proactively introduced to concepts like market research, budgeting and financial planning.
Higher Achievement provides demanding after-school and summer academic programs to narrow the opportunity gap for middle school youth in underserved communities. The program offers an intensive year-round learning environment with role models and a culture set to high expectations. This entrance program results in college bound scholars with the character, confidence, and skills to succeed. Staff participation ranges from Chair of the President's Council to mentors, helpers and buddy mentors.
PwC's "Earn Your Future" campaign is a $160 million investment created to address youth education with a focus on financial literacy. In its first year, the campaign impacted 500,000 youth and 18,000 educators, and partners and staff contributed 150,000 volunteer service hours to youth education and development. Additionally, PwC donated $12 million to support youth related causes. "Earn your Future" pledges to reach 2.5 million youth and educators to increase financial competency through bolstering financial literacy programs across the U.S. and increasing training opportunities for educators.
