METROPOLIS, Ill. (AP) - A southern Illinois physical education teacher says his school district settled a federal lawsuit against his will that claims he sexually abused a third-grade girl three decades ago.
The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan (http://bit.ly/1iTmCuZ) reports that Darryl Bentson of Metropolis says in a statement that he preferred to have the matter resolved during a trial. He says he didn't consent to the settlement by Massac County's school system.
Bentson says the case was settled without any admission of guilt, though the accuser's attorney stood behind the allegations of sexual misconduct.
Terms of the settlement weren't disclosed.
Now in her mid-30s, Bentson's accuser sued in March 2012, alleging she recalled suppressed memories of the supposed abuse. She claims the school district failed to protect her.
