SANTA BARBARA, CA (KCOY/CBS) - More than 50 rescued Chihuahuas are shipping out of California to places where they are in high demand.

Santa Barbara County's DAWG - Dog Adoption and Welfare Group - saved the little guys from kill shelters and are sending them to places like Montana and Colorado where more hearty breeds are abundant.

"They just don't have a lot of little dogs there," DAWG manager Angela Adan said. "They have a lot of large-breed hounds, labs, things like that. And there's a high demand for Chihuahuas."

The 52 total dogs making the journey were a result of overpopulation in several areas of California.

People in the community donated coats, boots and leashes for every dog. They were scheduled to arrive at their destinations by this weekend.
