(CNN) – A new study finds eating more vegetables may help lower your blood pressure.

The new findings were published Monday in the scientific journal Jama Internal Medicine.

Participants following a vegetarian diet saw a significant dip in blood pressure, compared to their omnivore counterparts.

The study looked at strict vegetarian diets as well as those that include fish and eggs.

Experts point to a number of factors for the possible correlation: vegetarian diets are often lower in sodium and saturated fats, and because vegetables are less energy dense than other foods and you can eat more of them for fewer calories.

Nearly a third of American adults have high blood pressure, known as hypertension, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
