STANDORD, CA (KPIX/CNN) – Doctors are searching for more information about a "polio-like syndrome" that has caused paralysis in a few children in California.

Neurologists have identified five young patients who developed paralysis in one or more of their limbs between August 2012 and July 2013.

Dr. Keith Van Haren, a pediatric neurologist at Stanford University's Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, says it's very concerning.

"The condition we're talking about here is a sudden onset of weakness that can occur over the course of hours," Van Haren said. "It can affect one or more limbs and the prognosis we've seen so far in not good, most the children we've seen have not recovered."

Doctors say all the children had been vaccinated against the polio virus.

Two of the children tested positive for Enterovirus 68, which is a rare type of Enterovirus.

Samples from the other three were not taken soon enough for conclusive results.
