CHICAGO (AP) - Federal officials are expected to give more details about a new Chicago institute designed to be a national flagship research site for digital manufacturing.
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is in Washington D.C., where President Barack Obama is expected to announce the initiative Tuesday. Another institute will be in Detroit. The facility will focus on lightweight materials.
The institutes are being seeded by $70 million each from the federal Defense Department and millions more from outside sources under a public-private partnership.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has said the lab will help make Chicago an epicenter of digital manufacturing.
Quinn has been in Washington to attend meetings at the White House and governors' groups. On Monday he delivered a keynote address focused on states facing natural disaster recovery.
