NEW YORK (NY1/CNN) – Spike Lee's former Brooklyn neighborhood is back in the headlines, days after the director complained about newcomers to the area.

A home next door to where Lee's family still lives was spray-painted with the words "Do the Right Thing," the name of Lee's 1989 film.

Neighbors say they believe the vandalism was in retaliation for an anti-gentrification speech Lee gave on Tuesday, and the vandals just got the wrong house.

Lee delivered a profanity-filled speech about new residents who want to change the old, established neighborhoods like the one he grew up in.

Investigators are looking into whether there is any connection between the speech and the vandalism.
