Instagram party invite ends with girl shot at Zelma W George Rec Center

What one classmate called a "high school banger party" ended with a 16-year-old girl taking a bullet to her left hip.

Cleveland police confirm the incident happened at 11:40 p.m. Saturday, March 1 at the Zelma W George Recreation Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. 

18-year-old Zahne Pearl told 19 Action News the victim, known as "Mimi" is friends with her little sister.

She said she was there to hold "Mimi" right after the shot was fired. 

"She had her head on my purse. She had to set her head up. She kept trying to get up. She was conscious. The ambulance took too long. She was nervous. She was scared," Pearl recounted. 

The party invite was shared on Instagram. Hundreds of students showed up. 

"My friends threw it. There were no cops at the door. There were boys from school searching people at the door. Some of them were let through the side door without being searched," Pearl shared. 

John F. Kennedy and East Tech were amongst some of those represented.

According to Cleveland Police a group of young men got into a fight and the young lady ended up the victim.

The investigation continues as to whether the shots were fired inside the rec center or in the parking lot. 

Pearl said this happened inside. 

Pearl stated, "There wasn't one police officer inside the rec center. They were all outside."

According to police their preliminary investigation reveals that the shooting was preceded by a large fight in the parking lot.

The victim was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center.

Officers report that the suspects fled and three males were taken into custody a short time later.
