SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

After many months of waiting, the Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded $39 million to the Diocese of Springfield Monday.

The money was awarded for damage to schools during a tornado in June of 2011. Bishop Timothy McDonnell said Cathedral High School will be torn down and a new school will be built.

Construction should begin soon on St. Michaels Preschool, St. Michael's Academy Middle School and Cathedral High School. All were badly damaged by the tornado.

McDonnell said there was a lot of pressure to hurry the process, but he said their patience paid off. He said the diocese had to wait until negotiations with the insurance company were complete before they could begin talks with FEMA.

The money can only be spent on construction of the schools. McDonnell said students still need to be taken care of. He announced a Cathedral High School Tuition Endowment Fund was started to help send students to school.

McDonnell said this was the final piece of the puzzle they were waiting for to begin design and bid work. The money will also pay for demolition of the old building. He said work would begin once the permits were signed.
