BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Most everyone knows that purple, green and gold are the colors of Mardi Gras. However, that isn't the case for some.

For one particular parade group in Biloxi, the colors of Fat Tuesday are red, white and blue.

Biloxi VFW Post 2434 spent their Monday preparing their float for Tuesday's parade. Their decorations followed the theme of a patriotic celebration. More than two dozen post members and spouses will be riding the float on Fat Tuesday.

"It's a way for us to honor our veterans and have a good time at the same time. They are as excited as they can be," said post commander, Santa Cruz. "We've got 30 people that wanted to be in the parade and they worked very hard. So, they are excited and looking forward to it."

Eric Johnson is looking forward to riding in the parade. At age 52, the Desert Storm vet is among the youngest members of the VFW post.

"This will be the first time for me on a float. I've gone to just about every parade. I've been on the coast since 1982. I'm actually in the Air Force at Keesler, with the 403rd, with the Hurricane Hunters," said Johnson.

"Red, white and blue. You can't beat it, can't beat it. I know everybody's with gold and purple and green, and we'll have some of that and definitely be throwing those type of beads, but red, white and blue is the way to go," he said.

After spending just a few minutes with the VFW group, it's easy to sense the camaraderie and close friendships.

"They're wonderful. They are the best people I have ever known. And I have a great time with them. We love being a part of this post. We all love each other. We've all been friends a really long time and we have a great time," said Terri Hollomon.

They're almost ready for the next great time; parading a little patriotism in the Biloxi Mardi Gras parade.

Biloxi VFW Post 2434 has faced a long road of recovery since Katrina destroyed its headquarters. After years at a temporary location, they were finally able to build a new post on Veterans Avenue.

That new headquarters opened just four months ago.
