Pennsylvania students visit Pine Belt to build houses with Habitat for Humanity

PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

Instead of spending the week in Panama City like most college students, The Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity is hosting 12 students from Moravian College in Pennsylvania.

The students volunteered to build a house in the City of Petal. Laine Burnett with the Habitat Program said there are misconceptions when it comes to Habitat Homes.

"The biggest myth people have is that we give homes away to people. We do not give homes away to people, we actually help people with lower income be able to finance their home through us for 0 percent for 20 years," said Burnett. "They will have a regular monthly payment just like most families have mortgage payments, she will have her mortgage payment. Her mortgage comes back into habitat, which goes back into the habitat fund and makes us eligible to build for the next family in line."

Students built the first wall of the house off McInnis and 4th street in Petal Monday afternoon.

Another group of students from Austin Peay State University in Tennessee will also volunteer their time on the Petal Home Beginning March 7th.

Volunteers expect the project to be completed in seven weeks.
