Krewe of Comogo parade rolls through Plaquemine

PLAQUEMINE, LA (WAFB) -

Carnival season wraps on Fat Tuesday, but it was an exciting Lundi Gras as the second annual Krewe of Comogo parade rolled through Plaquemine and crowds were out in force.

The Krewe of Comogo was once again tested by weather. Last year, it was rain. This year, it was near-freezing temperatures. However, Mother Nature did not stop those in attendance from enjoying a little early Mardi Gras.

Smiling faces braved the elements and lined the streets, hoping to pull in the perfect beads. It was all part of a growing tradition for the city of Plaquemine.

"I like the floats, the candy, the beads and I thank my mom for bringing us out on this cold day for the parade," said Alexis Dorsey.

"The music - it's popping," said another little girl as she burst into laughter.

"The floats, the lights and the excitement on people's faces," added a boy named Alex.

Of course, some needed a little more convincing than others.

"The weather's testing me," said a man named Jorge. "If it was warmer, it'd be good, but it's a nice parade."

Warm, it was not. But some, like Mona Simoneaux showed up prepared. She brought a little portable sunshine after getting the warning in some early evening forecasts.

"I did but that didn't stop us," Simoneaux explained. "We knew what we were doing (laughs)."

So did the folks who spread the fun as part of the Krewe of Comogo. Earl Comeaux started the krewe and parade in honor of his sister, Brenda, who died of cancer in 2009. He said the parade continues to grow and gain support.

"It's a big thing for the city; it's a big thing for the parish," Comeaux said. "Some people need to be convinced to get on the float the first time but once they're there, they're in."

In just its second year, the Krewe of Comogo nearly doubled in size to 16 floats. Organizers added they expected more than 10,000 people to attend the parade and enjoy the fun.
