Winning 18 consecutive games takes coaching, talent and some luck along the way. On Saturday Pascagoula rallied to upend Laurel 59-58 in the 5A South State Championship game at Laurel.
La'Datren Deas exploded down the court, sank the lay up giving the Panthers a one point advantage with 3 seconds left on the clock.
The Golden Tornadoes attempted to score a last second game winning bucket, it didn't happen.
Head coach Ronald Norman's Panthers punched their ticket to the Big House in Jackson.
Norman said,"We knew it was going to be a process and it was going to take some time. We had a pretty tough schedule, yeah you play Gulfport twice at the beginning of the season, West Harrison twice, Moss Point, Harrison Central. Those are some good basketball teams that we played and we had some lumps along the way but the kids just stayed to it and they showed great fortitude and they believed everything that I mentioned to them."@
Two seniors lead the Pascagoula attack, Bobby Nettles and La'datren Deas. Nettles is bagging 12 points per game and Deas is netting 10 points.. which means it's been a team effort with the likes of Montrell Shepard, Jacques Belford, Jaylen Smith and Carlos Liddell all providing a spark that has ignited a Panthers attack both offensively and defensively.
The Pascagoula Panthers battle Vicksburg March 10 at 2:30 in the afternoon in Jackson's Mississippi Coliseum in the Class 5A State semifinals.
