GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A New Orleans man is back on dry land after running his boat aground on Cat Island Monday night.

The US Coast Guard said a 41-foot-sailing vessel hit the north side of the island shortly after 6pm. The occupant has only been described a 35-year-old man from New Orleans.

The Coast Guard quickly responded. And after high winds started pushing waves into the vessel, the boater asked to be evacuated. Officials said a helicopter was flown in from New Orleans around 8:30pm, and the man was flown back to an air station in Louisiana to be picked up by his family.

The Coast Guard said the man was not injured in the wreck.
