Officials: Child called 911 with old cell phone 162 times

Posted: Updated:

The Metro Nashville Emergency Communications Center says employees received 162 false 911 calls from a child playing with an old cell phone in less than 24 hours.

Officials say the calls started around noon Tuesday and continued into the morning on Wednesday.

The service on the phone was deactivated, but it still had a battery, so the child could still dial 911.

While several employees tried to talk the child into handing over the phone to an adult or letting them know where she was, one call taker was eventually able to keep the child on the phone long enough to pinpoint her location on Wednesday morning.

Police officers visited the child's home at an apartment complex on Wallace Road and talked to her parents.

The emergency communications center takes over 3,500 calls a day, and officials say there is no reason to believe the child's calls delayed anyone with an emergency from being assisted.
