Body found in trash pile at Kansas City recycling facility

Kansas City police are trying to come up with answers in a death investigation. A body was found in a trash pile at a recycling plant near Winchester Avenue and Raytown Road, just west of Interstate 435 Tuesday morning.

It was a shocking discovery about 4:30 a.m. when crews found the body in a pile of trash that had just been unloaded from the back of the truck.

The body apparently came into a Material Recovery and Transfer plant in the back of a packer truck. The type of truck is a large recycling truck that drives around town and scoops up dumpsters and empties them into the back of the truck.

The company's driver was collecting materials Tuesday morning and didn't notice the body. It was only later that it was discovered by a loader transferring the material.

"When we arrived we did locate a dead body in a pile of trash. The business is in the business of collecting trash and dumping it at that sight then relocating it to another site and the body was in a freshly dumped pile of trash," said Capt. Tye Grant with the Kansas City, MO, Police Department.

The Kansas City-based Material Recovery and Transfer handles a lot of recycling and some trash in the area. But because of the route police aren't sure what exact location or dumpster the body was unloaded from.

"We don't know exactly, but that will be part of the investigation to determine where exactly they picked up that body. Obviously we can determine the route they used and what locations prior to dumping it," Grant said.

It was a body of a male, but his age is unknown. Police are calling it a death investigation and not a homicide at this point because they are not sure if the body was dumped or if it was a homeless man that passed away while sleeping in a dumpster.

Material Recovery and Transfer did not want to speak on camera, but did issue a statement saying:

"The employee who found the body does not work for us, but was very upset after discovering the body. He was loading the material into separate containers when he discovered the body in the pile and we immediately called police."

Police continue to investigate. They hope to have more information after a cause of death has been determined.
