Richmond Police train new K-9s, give inside look at academy

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Bad guys, you've now been warned: the Richmond Police K-9 unit has two new dogs they're training right now to search for you.

The newest members of the K-9 Unit are Nitro and Diesel, both about 2-year-old Czech Sheppards. They are currently in the second of 14 weeks of training.

Right now, the dogs are working on the basics.

"We've got to work on a relationship, bonding between the two of us," said Sgt. Mike Bohannon, who partners with Nitro. "It just takes a little while of playing with each other, some time together, going home, learning a new home, riding in the truck together and just learning, 'this is going to be my new dad.'"

From there, they'll learn the skills they'll need out on the streets.

"We start with basic obedience, making sure the dog is paying attention to the handler," explained Officer Sam Hernandez, who runs the academy. "From there, we'll kind of progress to building work. They'll start tracking."

Richmond actually trains dogs for the surrounding localities. At this particular academy, trainers are also working with Hanover's new dog, Loki.

The three dogs specialize in apprehension.

"We've done different tests where we've had officers try and clear a building where it takes a long time, whereas we'll do that same test with a K-9 and that dog will find him very, very quick," Hernandez said.

So far, the new guys mean good things for public safety.

"I can tell you we like what we're seeing in these dogs that we're getting," Hernandez added.

These dogs are set to finish with the academy on June 6.
