Nashville opens doors on new police facility downtown

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Nashville officially dedicated its newest police precinct on Tuesday. Central Precinct moved from its previous location on Broadway to a brand new building across the street from the Music City Center.

The Central Precinct serves one of Nashville's smallest but most concentrated areas - a downtown with 7,200 residents and 12 million tourists a year.

The facility has meeting space for the 122 police officers, detectives and bicycle and mounted officers who patrol downtown. It includes more office space and facilities to monitor special events.

Even though the new building is less than 10,000 square feet, that's more space than they had at Bridgestone Arena.

Not everyone was crazy about the new location off Korean Veterans Boulevard. It's built on a sliver of land with no room for a parking lot.

Instead, the city pays for officers to have a designated area in the Music City Center parking garage.

Precinct Cmdr. Jason Reinbold says it's a better arrangement than they had at the Bridgestone Area, where officers had no parking.

This new facility cost $4 million to build, at a rate of about $400 per square foot, not including the land.

Last year, Channel 4 News discovered the city never put the project our for competitive bids. It awarded the work to Bell-Clark, the same contractor who built the new convention center next door.

The new precinct may have been controversial, but it's getting good reviews from its early critics, like Metro Councilwoman Karen Bennett.

"It is a very narrow lot. It's an amazing use of the space they made of it," she said.
