MARION, NC (AP/FOX Carolina) -

Schools and other public offices in McDowell County will close early Monday in observance of the funeral for the Forest Service officer who was reportedly killed by a manhunt suspect March 12.

Officer Jason Crisp and his K-9 partner Maros died following a shootout with manhunt suspect Troy Whisnant in Burke County, according to earlier reports.

Whisnant, who was later shot and killed by State Troopers and Avery County deputies, was reportedly on the run after killing his father and step-mother, according to investigators.

A private visitation service for Crisp was scheduled for Sunday at West Court Baptist Church in Marion.

The public is invited to pay their respects to officer Crisp along the processional route between the Westmoreland Funeral Home and McDowell High School on Monday afternoon, officials said.

The processional will leave the funeral home shortly after 1 p.m. The processional begins on Main Street, then turns west onto US 70 West. The casket will be moved from the hearse to an NC Highway Patrol escort near the intersection of US 70 West and the US 221 bypass, officials seed. From there, the processional will continue to the high school from US 70 West. All traffic will be stopped as the procession passes, officials said.

Funeral services for the slain officer will then begin around 2 p.m. at McDowell County High School.

Officials said parking will be very limited and will be reserved for family, law enforcement, government vehicles and marked handicap vehicles. Everyone parking at the high school must use the entrance from US 70 West, not High School Hill, officials said.

Officials said overflow parking will be available at the Roses parking lot at on North Main Street and the Peebles parking lot on US 70. Buses will begin a shuttle service to the high school starting at 12:30 p.m., officers said.

A private burial Burial will follow at the West Court Cemetery. Officials said Maros' cremated remains will be buried with Crisp in his casket.

All McDowell County Schools will close at noon Monday in observance of the funeral, along with several other public offices, according to county officials.

McDowell Technical Community College will be closing for day classes from noon to 5 p.m. Monday for students, faculty and staff.

The business office of the McDowell County Sheriff's Office will close at noon Monday and will resume normal hours on Tuesday.

MCDowell County District and Superior Courts will adjourn at noon Monday, but the courthouse will remain open.
