Two safely escape small house fire

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Fire Department said two people escaped from a house fire early Tuesday morning.

It happened on Newkirk Avenue around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, which is near the intersection of Shipyard Boulevard and S. 17th Street.

Crews arrived six minutes after getting the call. The fire was said to be under control within five minutes of them arriving on scene.

One of the people in the home was treated on scene by EMS for smoke inhalation and was transported for precautionary reasons.

Fire officials say the fire was accidental and was started by an electrical appliance in the kitchen. Crews managed to contain the fire damage to the kitchen area. There was smoke damage throughout the house, though. Total damages were estimated to be around $25,000.

Fire officials say the residents managed to escape because their smoke detectors alerted them to the fire.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
