KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police are trying to figure out what led to an accident that killed a child and left another seriously hurt.

Kansas City police said that just a couple hours before sunset Saturday, a woman driving a minivan west on Northeast Winn Road near North Bellefontaine Avenue hit two boys.

It happened as she drove over a hill. One of the boys, 9-year-old Jordan Hale, died at the scene.

The other, 6-year-old Jesus Gonzales, was taken to Children's Mercy Hospital with broken limbs and has been drifting in and out of consciousness, according to the boy's grandmother. He could also need some reconstructive surgery.

Police said the boys were not related.

Jordan was a second grader at an elementary school in the North Kansas City School District.

Mary Jo Burton, a spokeswoman for the school district, would not immediately release the school's name Sunday.

"Our focus is to help the students and staff to cope with this loss," Burton said.

She said it is the district's policy to provide extra grief counselors at the school Monday.

Investigators said the two boys were riding a long skateboard in the middle of the roadway. The woman driving the minivan told officers that they suddenly appeared, and she didn't have time to stop.

The accident happened in a residential area close to Cooley Park.

Sgt. Bill Mahoney says it is a busy street, but they don't know if speed played a role in the accident.

"You do have a lot of traffic in this area. It's pretty heavily populated. There are a lot of children. It's always a factor. We're just starting our investigation, so we'll make that determination down the road," Mahoney said.

Police said the woman is cooperating with investigators. They don't know whether she will face charges at this time.
