AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -

Auburn University has confirmed that its College of Business network suffered a cyber attack.

According to the university, the unidentified hacker could have accessed the server between Oct. 21 and Nov. 20. The FBI has been notified of the incident, and investigations are being conducted.

The university became aware of a server that had been compromised, and immediately patched the vulnerability while also launching an internal investigation to determine the scope of the attack. When it was revealed that the incident could result in the unauthorized access to personal information, the university hired an independent, third-party computer forensics expert to assist in identifying the full extent of data that was potentially exposed.

Personal information relating to 13,698 individuals, with ties to the university, was identified on the compromised server. The information on the server varies by person, but mainly pertained to courses being taken by current and former Auburn students.  It also included information about current and former faculty and staff, with the majority including social security numbers.

Auburn University has no evidence that the files containing personal information were actually accessed, and is unaware of any actual or attempted misuse of the information.

The university is offering each person, who was affected by the hacking, one year of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services with Experian.
