AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Eight people were arrested early Monday morning at the Travelodge on Washington Road, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Demetrius Foy, Steven Holley, Troy Tjovaran, Rebecca Staples, Tina Herman, Brittany Turner, Stephen Watkins, and William Faircloth were all charged with possession of drugs and intent to distribute, according to the sheriff's office.

Authorities said they found the suspects after one of the men used counterfeit money at the Circle K at 2916 Washington Road.

There were several types of drugs and other illegal items in the motel room, according to the sheriff's office.

"They recovered a couple counterfeit $20 bills, as well as some drugs, some narcotics, and some paraphernalia," Sgt. Michael McDaniel said.

Deputies found 4.4 grams of methamphetamine, 5.01 grams of marijuana, and several items of paraphernalia in the room including scales, glass pipes and papers with marijuana flakes on them.

McDaniel also said this isn't the first time deputies have been called to the Travelodge.

"It doesn't really matter if it's a high-end, uppity type hotel or a really cheap hotel, you're gonna have some kind of a criminal element somewhere," he said.

He said this problem is something the sheriff's office takes very seriously.

"When we see some form of suspicious activity such as this, be it narcotics or narcotic paraphernalia, then we're going to do everything we can to take action right then," McDaniel said.

He said one of the main ways to help fight problems like this is through community assistance.

"Community involvement working with, hand-in-hand, with our road deputies, we're able to solve several hundred crimes alone," he said.

Police are asking the community to step up and help fight the drug problem as part of the community policing initiative by reporting any suspicious activity they see to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
