POCAHONTAS, AR (KAIT) - There was very little Marty Cagle didn't do in Randolph County.

Cagle passed away Monday afternoon and until his final day, he loved and served his community. It was obvious through the lifetime of work he poured into it.

"He was a good friend to many people, didn't know a stranger...always willing to help anybody with anything," Pocahontas Fire Chief Jimmy Shields told Region 8 News Tuesday.

Now, reminders fly throughout the county of a fallen brother.

"We did that immediately at all three fire stations here in town, we lowered all our flags to half staff in honor of Marty Cagle," Shields said.

Multiple other departments did the same. As Cagle filled many positions throughout the county.

Now lies an obvious void.

"He was our training officer at the fire department. For the county, he was OEM director, he taught CPR to all the fire departments, police departments, sheriff department...trained our firemen here in Pocahontas and probably 90% of the firemen in the county...just...all around great guy, couldn't ask for a better fireman, a better instructor. It's a tragic loss for anybody but it's gonna be hard shoes to fill."

Cagle also served as a part time deputy sheriff for Randolph County and an EMT.

59-year-old Cagle passed away Monday afternoon from medical issues.

"Nobody can believe that it's happened, it's just the farthest thing from anybody's mind for anything like that happening but for somebody that's so involved as he is, and is more than willing to help anybody...it's just hard to grasp," Shields said.

While many surrounding departments that have worked with and been touched by Cagle have offered to give the department a break and a chance to grieve, they're trying to continue to serve in honor of their fallen brother.

"The group of guys we've got here, they've all decided they want to come to work and cover the city and county and they'd know that Marty would want them to do that and so they're trying their best to move forward and...it's just hard to do."

Cagle will be given a full fire fighter's funeral. Visitation for Cagle will be held Thursday from 5 to 8 pm at McNabb Funeral Home. His funeral will take place at 10 o'clock Friday morning at McNabb and burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Engelberg.
