HOPKINSVILLE, KY (WSMV) -

Students at Christian County High School wore their school colors of red, white and blue Friday in honor of two classmates who died in a car crash.

Dequavias "Qua" Weaver and Jacob Michael Blankenship, both 17, were coming home from watching a basketball tournament game March 21 when their pickup suddenly careened off the road and hit a parked tractor-trailer.

Weaver died in the collision, and Blankenship died in surgery shortly after.

"Wonderful kids, wonderful human beings. Their families are so proud of them, rightfully so. Our school family is proud of them, rightfully so. They are good young men," said Christian County Principal Mike Stevenson.

Two other boys who were in the pickup are expected to recover physically, although it may take a lifetime to heal emotionally.

"It's just hard knowing that two people you used to see in the hallway all the time, walking and clowning around, they're not there anymore and they'll never be there," said classmate Isaiah Pollard.

Students at other area schools, including Christian County's crosstown rival, Hopkinsville High School, showed solidarity with the Colonels by also donning red, white and blue Friday.

"It's one of the classiest acts that I have ever been a part of. It displays great character and integrity throughout this community," Stevenson said.

It's a community standing together in a time of tragedy.

"It's the only way to go through it. Because if you try to go through it individually, it just won't work," Pollard said.

"Our motto is 'together we're better,'" Stevenson said.

Blankenship's funeral was held Wednesday, and Weaver's is set for Saturday at the Second Baptist Church in Hopkinsville.
