DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Decatur police said a man at Decatur City Jail died after being found unresponsive in his jail cell.

Police said that around 2 a.m. on Sunday, officers responded to Geno's Pub on 6th Avenue in response to a reported fight in the parking lot. Upon arrival, officers said they made contact with a woman lying on the lot and determined she was intoxicated after talking with her and bystanders.

Officers said that once the woman got to her feet, she began cursing and swinging fists at those around her. Police said they tried to arrest the woman for public intoxication, but her father, Marty Earl Whisman, who was also intoxicated, tried to intervene and prevent the arrest.

Both Whisman and his daughter were arrested and charged with public intoxication, and the father was also charged with resisting his daughter's arrest. Both were taken to Decatur City Jail and booked.

At around 5 a.m., a corrections officer said he served breakfast, but Whisman did not get up. Corrections officers said they entered the cell and found Whisman unresponsive, lying on the mat. The officers said they immediately started CPR and called for help.

Decatur Fire & Rescue and First Response Ambulance arrived and took Whisman to Decatur Morgan Hospital. Despite the emergency room personnel's efforts, police said Whisman was pronounced dead.

Officers said that according to relatives, Whisman had a history of heart problems and had a heart attack in 2012.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation will be reviewing this incident, and the Alabama Department of Forensic Science will be performing an autopsy. An official cause of death has not been ruled.
