Update: Toledo boy's $20 gift multiplies

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A local boy's $20 gift to a soldier has multiplied into a quarter of a million dollars in donations.

Myles Eckert, 9, was featured on CBS's On the Road with Steve Hartman in February.

After finding a $20 bill in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel in Maumee, Myles decided to give the money to another patron of the restaurant. The recipient, Lt. Col. Frank Dailey of the Air National Guard, got the money wrapped up in a hand-written letter from Myles.

Myles wrote that he wanted to give the money to Dailey and his family, because Dailey is a soldier, like his father.

Army Sgt. Andy Eckert was killed in Iraq, just five weeks after Myles was born.

After the touching story aired on CBS, a lot of people wanted to give Myles the $20 back.

Instead of taking the money, the Eckert family is directing donations to Snowball Express, a charity helping kids, like Myles, who have lost a parent to war.

According to an update from reporter Steve Hartman, donations have totaled more than a quarter of a million dollars.
