Montgomery man killed in vehicle vs. train crash on Wares Ferry Road

The victim of Friday morning's fatal train vs. passenger vehicle collision is being identified by authorities.

Alabama State Troopers say 52-year-old Russel Burnside was fatally injured when the 2010 Nissan Altima he was driving collided with a CSX train around 10:15 a.m.

The crash happened at a crossing point on Wares Ferry Road at McLemore Road in Montgomery County.

Burnside, a Montgomery resident, was the only person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene. The train conductor was not injured.

State Troopers say witnesses reported that the signals lights and alarms were activated at the time of the crash and add that Burnside "failed to yield to the train." There are no crossing-arms at the location where the crash occurred.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities are not releasing any additional details.

Officers with the Montgomery Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff's Department, and Alabama State Troopers all responded to the scene.
