ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

The Department of Public Safety has released more details surrounding the death of a 12-year-old Santa Fe, Texas, boy on April 1 who drowned after his father drove into the Neches River.

James Patterson was traveling on US 59 South from Mountain Home, Ark., to Santa Fe when he drove off the bridge and into the Neches River. Patterson and his 14-year-old daughter were able to escape the vehicle but Chance Patterson drowned at the scene.

The DPS investigation reveals James Patterson was fatigued from driving and distracted by a vehicle passing him in the outside lane. Patterson moved over to the left in what he thought was an improved shoulder and instead drove into the river.

According to DPS, Patterson voluntarily provided a blood sample and results are pending. No charges have yet been filed.
