TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Tyler Independent School District broke ground Friday morning on the first of three new schools. The nearly 150,000 square foot, two-story school will be home to about 1,000 students from the southwest part of the city.

A few elementary students who will attend the Three Lakes Middle School were present for Friday's ground breaking ceremony.

"Most of my friends will be here when the school opens up. This will be a good school," said future student Sam Eckert. "I'll get to ride my bike here because it's a neighborhood school for me."

Voters last year approved a $160 million bond to build schools and renovate two others.

"As part of Tyler Proud and then as parents of a future student here at the middle school we worked really hard to get this passed," Elicia Eckert said. "It's an investment in our community and we're really happy to see it come to fruition."

"It's great to see the community supporting the bond that is building all these new middle schools," Scott Eckert said. "Tyler is growing and having new schools is important for the community."

Three Lakes Middle School is expected to open by Fall 2015.
