LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

When severe weather threatens, there's nothing like the safety and peace of mind residents can get from a storm shelter.

And thanks to a new program, home and business owners will be protected from getting lost in the aftermath of a storm.

Storm Shelter Registration is essential in the case of an emergency, providing a map to you and your family if you get stranded inside the shelter.

The registry uses GPS detection to locate exactly where shelters stand on your property.

Clinton Thetford is the Emergency Management Coordinator for Lubbock County. He says registering for those shelters in or near your home could make all the difference when severe weather calls.

"It's crucial because this will be the first place we look to after a significant weather event when we are looking for survivors who may be trapped in shelters," Thetford said.

The program has been implemented by city and county officials but it's also available for smaller towns in the Lubbock area.

"Wolfforth, Idalou, Slaton, some of the smaller jurisdictions have storm shelter registrations so check with your city hall about registrations."

If you do live inside Lubbock county, however, you can click on the link below to register your storm shelter: http://www.co.lubbock.tx.us/department/division.php?fDD=33-213
