MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama State University has received a grant from the National Science Foundation to serve as one of its Research Experience for Undergraduates sites. The $336,634 grant is good from April 1 until March 30, 2017.

The REU program is a highly sought after national program. The program will host ten undergraduate students for ten weeks in a summer program by providing "hands-on" experience in experimental research in nanotechnology and biotechnology.

Dr. Komal Vig, the principal investigator of the ASU research program, said that the goal for the training is to lead to successful pursuits of graduate degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

"This is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to engage in cutting-edge training in nanobiotechnology. Due to our strengths in this field, ASU was selected to be the REU training site, which is a nationwide competition," Dr. Vig said. "We are excited to have grants such as this, which are very difficult to receive and which expose students to research in STEM fields; motivating them for a career in much needed STEM areas in the country."

The grant will provide a $5,000 stipend, on-campus housing and meal and travel allowances during the ten week period. Students who are pursuing undergraduate studies in STEM fields are eligible to apply for the program.
