MACON CO., AL (WSFA) -

At least nine roads washed out Tuesday in Macon County after heavy rain and storms moved through the area.

Officials say the nearly six inches of rain in two days has been detrimental to roads. In a matter of 30 minutes, Macon County Road 30 between CR 40 and CR 9 became impassable and overflowing with water.

"A large lake that's about 15 or 20 acres there, and then another lake there about the same size, and the dam busted on this lake and this lake is running into the busted lake and it all come through here and washed the road away," Macon County Commissioner Robert Berry said.

Fran Copeland owns the dam, which is in the Millstead area.

"The property has been in the family over 100 years and the dam itself has never broke. Mother Nature hath fury that we can't control," Copeland said.

Crews worked to fix the water pipe that burst and left nearly 200 residents without water for several hours.

"And we have several washouts through the county and you know we already strapped for funds and this is going to put us in a harder situation trying to get these fixed and fix the maintenance of our regular roads so we hope that we get some help from somebody," Berry said.

Macon County officials say it's going to take a lot of work before this road can get back to normal. The drainage structure was damaged. Crews will replace it and also add another one. They said it's going to take at least two weeks before they can begin work because all of the water has to be drained.

It will cost around $40,000 to repair the road.
