Task force makes teacher pay recommendations to lawmakers

Posted: Updated:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A legislative task force has made some recommendations to the entire General Assembly for overhauling teacher compensation in North Carolina. But several educators on the panel are unhappy with the results, which include another study.

The Educator Effectiveness and Compensation Task Force finalized its conclusions Monday after less than two months of work and four meetings.

The report says in the short term salaries should be increased significantly for teachers with less than ten years' experience. Increasing all salaries is a long-term goal. Gov. Pat McCrory and legislative leaders already have committed to raise the salary floor to $35,000.

Legislators said they were disappointed the recommendations failed to go further. The recommendations ask the legislature to direct the State Board of Education to develop a detailed proposal.
